DataNucleus started in April 2008 continuing on from the Open Source Java persistence system Java Persistent Objects (JPOX). The founders of DataNucleus were the originators of JPOX but due to the significant change in direction of JPOX from its conception to its position in early 2008 it was decided that to broaden the scope would be better met by a new project that built on the JPOX codebase.
