DataNucleus originated in 2008 building on the codebase of the Open Source Java persistence
system Java Persistent Objects (JPOX).
The founders of DataNucleus are the originators of JPOX. Some questions that may arise from
this situation are answered below.
What happens to JPOX now that we have DataNucleus?
JPOX development could continue if people get involved. This would only ever likely be for
the JPOX 1.2 lifecycle. DataNucleus has now moved on from that codebase so backporting
really isn't something to be considered.
Is DataNucleus effectively JPOX 1.3+?
Effectively yes, though note that DataNucleus broadens the scope significantly
from the Java persistence problem domain. Java persistence aspects will continue to
be developed within DataNucleus.
Will JPOX continue to be supported?
No. We simply do not have the time to support 2 systems. DataNucleus is a simple upgrade
from JPOX 1.2 and users who require support (either commercial or free) need to upgrade
to take advantage of the new system. They will then benefit from all developments that have
happened since JPOX.
